Film coating – which film is the right one?

Laser printers and copiers fix the toner on the film by means of heat and pressure. These films specially developed for laser technology are therefore equipped with a special coating. Coated films allow you to achieve particularly high-quality results, especially if you e.g. photorealistic prints or colour-fast overhead projection.

In addition, the coated films offer better performance when it comes to feeding, throughput behaviour, anti-static capabilities, blackening and toner adhesion.

In contrast, while uncoated films may appear more transparent, this is the only advantage.

Single Sided Coated:

Optical Printer Pass

Why do some transparent films have a sensor strip or backing paper?

Printers that have an optical printer pass cannot recognise transparent material and therefore do not retract it.

Thanks to the glued, white sensor strips or the underpaper, the printer/copier recognises the transparent films. It depends on how the respective device retracts the film: for printers, films should be used in which the sensor strip or the underpaper is glued on the short side, for copiers on the long side.

Other special features of the film range

Stackable

A great advantage of the coated Avery Zweckform films is that they can be stacked. This means that you do not have to put the films individually in a special printer bay such as Insert additional feed, but you can process the films in the normal standard bay. This is especially helpful if you want to print multiple slides at once, presentations with lots of slides or multiple copies.

Anti-static

However, coated films offer another very important advantage: Laser printers or copiers work with static charge when printing. However, uncoated film material can charge statically, which can then lead to problems with printing. Thanks to the special coating of the laser and copy films, unwanted static charge is prevented, the films can be printed without any problems. This ensures better printing results.

Heat resistant

Standard laser printers and copiers fix the toner at approx. 180°C to 210°C. Avery Zweckform coated films are made of polyester and have an extra high melting point of 267°C.

You can choose coated films depending on the application or printer with a thickness between 0.1 mm and 0.2 mm. Note that the thicker the material thickness, the higher quality and more heat-resistant the film. If you have a printer that fixes the toner in the upper temperature range, such as HP printers, you should choose a thicker film.
