What do the different colours mean?

The coloured end cap is used to identify the degree of hardness

The end cap can be replaced with the original end cap for the Mars technico 780C/788C 2mm lead holders. This helps identify the hardness level of the lead holder if you have several and use different degrees of hardness.

The Staedtler Mars carbon drawing leads are available in seven different degrees of hardness:

Black: HBRot: 2HViolet: 2BBordeaux: 4BGelb: 4H blue: BOrange: H
